“In Fly’s world, the
usual modus operandi of endless theme and variation or round-robin
riffing has given way to an intimate three-way dialogue. The result
is an expansive, illuminating palette of harmonies, tones and expressive
counterpoint.” – Amplifier
“Possessing an endless fund
of ideas, effortless fluency, muscular tone and an immaculate technique,
[Joshua Redman] must be the most perfect tenor saxophonist alive today.” – The
Observer London
Few ensembles epitomize collaborative creativity as perfectly
as Fly. Drummer Jeff Ballard, bassist Larry Grenadier, and saxophonist
Mark Turner eschew the traditional roles of their instruments and bring
a fresh approach to the trio format, where the whole is greater than
the sum of the parts. Although each is a star in his own right, the three
musicians emphasize the collective sound rather than the individual,
and the result is an unpredictable and exciting symbiosis. Add to this
mixture Joshua Redman, one of the most charismatic and lyrical soloists
to emerge from the 1990s resurgence, and creative fireworks are guaranteed.
Redman explored the pianoless trio format on his Grammy-nominated 2007
album Back East and has played with the individual members of Fly in
various contexts for years. A Berkeley native and Berkeley High School
alum, Redman has also been integral to the Bay Area’s jazz scene
as artistic director of the San Francisco Jazz Festival (2000-2007),
and part of its resident supergroup the SFJAZZ Collective (2004-2007).
