SJW All-Star Jam Session
Online: Jazz can flourish in concert halls, recording studios, and the world of academia, but it’s in the late-night, informal jam sessions that the real magic happens. That’s where you’ll hear spontaneous groupings of musicians playing for each other, exploring their favorite tunes, and sometimes engaging in the friendly one-upmanship of a “cutting” contest. The vibe can be relaxed and convivial, with musicians relishing each other’s stylistic nuances, or riotous, with soloists egging each other on and chomping at the bit for their turn to show their stuff; in the world of the jam session, the only constants are surprise and “All the Things You Are.” When the Stanford Jazz Workshop’s All-Star faculty–an unprecedented lineup of revered masters and rising stars–gets together, it will be the jam session to end all jam sessions. You’ll hear the experimentation and energy that come from mixing and matching the musical chemistry of this stellar roster, who have spent the week teaching and performing together.
