Mulgrew Miller is one of the most in-demand musicians in jazz, and his presence on countless classic albums has made his perhaps the quintessential modern piano sound. Valued for his versatility, boundless creativity, and impeccable taste, Miller has appeared on more than 400 recordings as a leader and as a sideman. He has played with a long list of modern jazz luminaries, including long-running collaborations with Art Blakey, Woody Shaw, Benny Golson, Johnny Griffin, Betty Carter, and Tony Williams. Born in Greenwood, Mississippi, Miller started studying piano at an early age, and the gospel music of his childhood continues to influence his style. Arriving in New York in 1977, he rapidly established himself as a top-shelf pianist and has been a driving force in jazz ever since. Mulgrew has released four live trio recordings (two each at Yoshi’s and the Kennedy Center, all on the MaxJazz label) in the last four years. He is currently the director of the prestigious Jazz Studies program at William Paterson University in New Jersey.
