| Who is eligible to attend Jazz Residency?
Jazz Residency is open to adult instrumentalists playing jazz at beginning* to advanced levels as well as music educators and jazz enthusiasts who wish to enhance their appreciation of the music and/or develop their understanding of the music and jazz techniques.
Non-musicians, music educators and musicians who are just beginning to study an instrument, may attend Jazz Residency as auditors.
All vocalists must audition for admission by submitting an enrollment recording. (For more information on the vocal program, please click here.)
Advanced instrumentalists and vocalists younger than 18 who have not previously attended Jazz Residency are required to submit an audio recording for admission. Instructions for the contents of the recording are included on the Recordings page. Participants under the age of 18 who audition for Jazz Residency and are not admitted will be offered placement in Jazz Camp contingent on space availability.
*Beginning students are defined as having little or no experience improvising or playing jazz in a small combo but should have studied their instrument for at least 18 months.
Are
friends and family welcome at any Jazz Residency events?
Family and friends of Jazz Residency participants are welcome to attend the Jazz Residency Participant Recital at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 7th 2008. Admission to this event is free.
Family and friends may purchase tickets to nightly Stanford Jazz Festival concerts, which are public, general admission, ticketed events. A ticket order form is available on our website.
Students attending Jazz Residency receive free admission to Stanford Jazz Festival concerts August 3-August 8.

Can I just attend and pay for
certain events and classes?
The Jazz Residency does not offer its classes on an individual, "a la carte" basis. However, participants may choose to audit the program. Auditors do not participate in jazz combos, master classes or Jazz Residency participant concerts. They are welcome to attend all other events and classes including concerts. Auditor fees are reduced from the full tuition price. Please see the price list page for more information.
Are there recreational opportunities during the Jazz Residency?
Residency participants will receive conference cards that will allow them access to the exceptional facilities at Stanford University. These include libraries, running track, swimming pool, golf course, bookstore, and more. Hours, rules, and admission fees are determined by the facility. What evening
events take
place?
After each evening's Stanford Jazz Festival concert, Jazz Residency participants may practice, attend faculty jam sessions (Monday through Thursday, following festival concerts), participate in informal or organized student jam sessions, or enjoy free time. All participants are invited to attend.
Stanford Jazz Workshop's counseling staff will supervise Jazz Residency resident participants under the age of 18 attending the jam session. Jazz Residency commuter participants under the age of 18 should make necessary supervision arrangements with their parents to attend the jam session.
Can I see a sample daily schedule?

Keep in mind that each participant's individual schedule will be determined at the beginning of Camp or Residency based upon their unique requirements.
What is a Jazz Residency Commuter?
Commuter participants are those who are not staying on campus in Stanford University dormitory facilities. Transportation for commuter participants must be arranged by the participant, or by the parent or guardian if the participant is younger than 18. Stanford Jazz Workshop is not responsible for the transportation of commuter students to the Stanford University campus.
Jazz Residency participants are expected to arrive on campus by 9:00 am. Classes end at 6:20 pm each day. Stanford Jazz Festival concerts end at approximately 10:00 pm each evening. Commuters do not receive meals, but may purchase their own food at the Tresidder Union on the Stanford University campus.
What is a Jazz Residency Resident?
Resident participants are those staying on campus in assigned Stanford University dormitory facilities. Jazz Residency Resident participants under age 18 will stay in dormitories under the supervision of Stanford Jazz Workshop camp counselors. Resident participants younger than 18 must adhere to a curfew of 10 p.m. as well as other policies established by Stanford Jazz Workshop. All resident participants must obey all rules and regulations of Stanford University. Only Jazz Residency Residents younger than 18 will receive a meal plan with their housing package, which allows them to eat at designated food concessions.
What is a Jazz
Residency Auditor?
Auditors may attend all classes, concerts and events but
do not play in combos, master classes or the Jazz Residency
Participant
performance.
Auditors
may
play in jam sessions. They are also invited to attend nightly
Stanford Jazz Festival
concerts and jam sessions.
What do participants eat?
Participants may eat at a range of food concessions in the
Tresidder Student Union. A variety of food options are available
including
sandwiches, pizza,
salads, and international choices. Additional food options
are available in the dormitories
and on the Stanford University campus. Although food choices
are limited on Sunday evening, during the week there will
be choices
for breakfast,
lunch, and dinner.
Commuter participants should plan to purchase meals as necessary
from restaurants on the Stanford University Campus. Resident
participants younger than 18
will
receive specific information on the meal plan at the Sunday
night dormitory
meeting.
What time is their lunch each day?
Lunch break is from noon to 1 pm.
What type of housing accommodations are available for Jazz Residency participants?
Jazz Residency participants who pay for a housing package are housed
in dormitories located on the Stanford University Campus. Housing packages
are either for a single (space permitting) or shared room. Generally,
students with a shared room assignment will be placed with one other same
sex roommate. Roommate requests can be submitted with the general
application. A roommate request is not a guarantee of rooming placement,
although SJW does its best to accommodate requests.
The dorms have shared, same sex bathroom/shower facilities. Dorms do not
have air conditioning. Because it can get hot during the summer at
Stanford, we advise all participants to bring their own fan.
Is there adult supervision
for Jazz Residency Resident participants under 18?
There is one counselor for every 10-12 resident students.
Can
students practice in the Dorms?
No. For the consideration of all dorm residents, students
can only practice at the Braun Music Center.
How much pocket
money
should
the participant
bring?
Prices at food providers at the Tresidder Student Union range
from $7 to $12 for a lunch meal. Jazz Residency Resident
participants younger than
18 will
receive a meal card, which can be used to purchase all meals.
Participants
may wish to
bring extra money to purchase books, jazz recordings, film,
snacks, souvenirs,
or other supplies.
The Stanford Federal Credit Union, Bank of America and Wells
Fargo Bank are located at Tresidder Memorial Union. ATM machines
connected
to the
STAR,
PLUS, CIRRUS,
MC, and VISA systems are also available.
Are there laundry
facilities?
Yes. Washers and dryers are located in the
dormitories, students must provide their own detergent.
Are there special hotel packages for families of Jazz Residency participants?
We suggest the following hotel partners to participants wishing to stay off campus during SJW programs. Please mention the Stanford Jazz Workshop when making your reservations.
How do I register?
You can apply online via the Stanford Jazz Workshop website beginning December 17th; you can download and fax a completed enrollment form, or, you add your name to our mailing list and request our 2008 brochure (which includes an enrollment form).
How much does Jazz Residency cost?
Costs range between $970 (tuition only) to $1655 (tuition, housing, food for participant under 18 years old). Please see the price list page for more information.
Is financial aid available?
A limited number of scholarships based upon financial need are available to SJW programs. Scholarship application postmark deadline: March 17, 2008. Scholarship applications may be downloaded here.
What forms of payment are acceptable?
Stanford Jazz Workshop accepts personal checks, cashier's checks, money orders and credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, American Express & Discover). Make checks out to "Stanford Jazz Workshop." There will be a $25 charge on any returned check.
When is payment due?
A $100 non-refundable deposit is due with your enrollment application for Jazz Residency. Please see information below

Space Availability and Processing
of Applications?
Space in all Stanford Jazz Workshop summer programs is limited and granted to eligible applicants with completed applications on a first-come,
first-served
basis. Registration opens in December 17th, 2007. Early registration
is strongly encouraged.
A complete application includes: application form, enrollment
recording (if required), and initial deposit. Incomplete
applications will
not be processed
and do not
guarantee a space in any program.
Deadlines:
March 17: Postmark deadline for scholarship applications.
June 16: Postmark deadline for full payment of Jazz Residency tuition (and room and board if applicable). Last day for cancellation requests for full refund, less deposit. Cancellation requests postmarked after June 16th will not be eligible for refund.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?
Deposits for Evening Summer, Jazz Camp, and Jazz Residency
are non-refundable. Cancellation requests for all programs
must be
made in writing. See

Where is Jazz Residency held and how do I get there?
Stanford Jazz Workshop's educational programs are presented
in the Braun Music Center near the Tresidder Student Union
on the

Does Stanford Jazz Workshop
pick up participants at the airport?
No. Stanford Jazz Workshop does not arrange transportation
for participants arriving at or departing from the airport.

Is parking available?
Parking on Stanford University is free on weekends and after 4:00 p.m. on weekdays. On weekdays, parking permits or hourly payment receipts are required for any parked vehicle on the Stanford University campus. Paid hourly parking is available at several lots. Daily and monthly parking permits are available for purchase at the Florence Moore Summer Conference office located across the parking lot from the Braun Music Center. Can
I attend the Stanford Jazz Festival during the week?
Stanford Jazz Festival concerts are public, general admission,
ticketed events. Concerts feature Stanford Jazz Workshop
faculty and guest
performers. Each
concert lasts approximately two hours.
Admission to Stanford Jazz Festival concerts is free for
Jazz Residency participants during the week they attend the
program (Sunday through Friday).
Students
must arrive at the concert
no later than 30 minutes prior to performance. After that,
Jazz Residency participants will be admitted with the general
public
on a space-available
basis.

When is the participant recital?
The Jazz Residency participant recital will be held on Thursday,
August 7 beginning at 7:00 pm. Admission is free.
Due to the large number of performing student combos, concerts
are held in multiple venues, with staggered start times.
A full concert
schedule
is posted
in the
Braun Music Center in the afternoon prior to each recital,
and SJW staff and volunteers provide schedule information
to audience
members
as they
arrive at the venues.
Note: Our office cannot
provide recital schedule information for individual students over
the phone.
What time do the recitals
end?
Jazz Residency participant recitals conclude at approximately
10:30 pm.
Where are the participant recitals?
Recital concerts take place at several venues on the Stanford
University campus, all near the Braun Music Center. Venues
may include Dinkelspiel
Auditorium, Campbell Recital Hall, and the Braun Rehearsal Hall. Participant ensembles'
venue assignments
are posted in the main lobbies of Braun Music Center
and Dinkelspiel Auditorium in the afternoon prior to the recital.
Please do
not call our offices to
find
out the scheduling for a particular participant. We cannot
provide this information over the phone. We appreciate
your understanding.
What should
the student
wear for the participant recital?
Neat, casual dress. Not formal.
Can family and friends videotape
or record the participant recital?
Yes, although we ask those interested in videotaping
to be considerate and respect others' ability to see
and hear
the
show without
disruption. We also
ask that
you use no extra lighting, and keep flash photography
to a minimum.
Are
there video or audio recordings of the Jazz Residency
recital for sale?
Stanford Jazz Workshop does not provide video or audio
recordings of the participant recitals to any students,
family, friends,
or public.
Those
interested in recording
or videotaping the performance may do so only with their
own equipment from their seats, and in a non-disruptive manner.
Is
there secured
instrument storage?
Yes. Instrument lockers are available on a limited, first-come,
first-served basis. Participants must provide their own
lock. For Jazz Residency
participants who are unable to get a locker, supervised
rooms for instrument storage
are available.
Does everyone have to bring their own instrument?
Are any available
for rent?
Most classrooms are equipped with a piano, a drum set,
and necessary amps. If possible, students may also bring
a small
portable amp.
In most other cases, students should bring their own instruments.
It is possible for students to borrow equipment and instruments
from Stanford
Jazz Workshop,
but for some instruments the choices are limited. If
it is difficult for
you to bring your own instrument, please see below for
more information, and call
our offices if you need additional information. A deposit
and a usage fee will be required. Students will be responsible
for any
damage
that occurs
to these
instruments. Students who may need to rent an instrument should contact:

Brass and Woodwind instruments:
There is a limited supply of saxophones, trumpets, trombones,
and tubas/sousaphones. Please contact us well in advance
to reserve these instruments. These
instruments will require a deposit and a usage fee.
Guitars:
We currently have no electric guitars available for loan. Basses and Cellos:
We have a limited number of acoustic basses and cellos available
to lend. A deposit and usage fee are required. These are
good quality instruments,
but
will not
be equipped with transducer "pick-ups." If you want to amplify these
instruments you must provide your own "pick up." Participants
are welcome to use our amplifiers (see below).
Pianos and Keyboards:
There will be a piano and/or keyboard provided in every rehearsal
room. Amps:
We will have a Peavey KBA100 in every combo room. These amps
have four channels, no effects, and limited equalization.
If bass and
guitar
players don’t
bring amps, they may both plug in to the KBA100. This is
not an optimal sonic situation, but it does work for rehearsal
purposes. There are a very limited
number of small GK bass amps and several guitar amps, which
are intended primarily for faculty use. If these amps are
available they can be used by
students, but
cannot be reserved in advance. If this situation is not adequate
to your needs, you may bring your own amp. Jazz Residency
participants may not remove
amps from
the rooms in which they are located. Separate guitar and
bass amps will be provided for all performance situations. Drums:
Drum sets and some percussion equipment will be available
for a usage fee of $35 to Stanford Jazz Workshop students who are
unable
to
bring their
own sets.
Students
will be able to use any of the drum equipment in our classrooms.
These drums will be kept in their designated combo rehearsal
room and cannot
be moved
by students. Payment of the usage fee does not entitle any
student to use the
set at all times, nor will a student have exclusive use of
one particular set. Students
may practice on Stanford Jazz Workshop's drum kits when they
are available. These practice opportunities will usually
be at night
when there are
no classes in
session. Jazz Residency participants may have to share sets
during master classes. Students should bring their own sticks, and may bring their own cymbals if they prefer. Sets will be provided at all performance situations.
Can students
study more than one instrument
at camp?
Students must pick a primary instrument, which is the instrument
they will use for their placement auditions on the first
day of Jazz Residency.
This
is the
instrument they will play in their combo. Jazz Residency participants may attend master classes on any instrument they choose.
Student
Behavior
All participants, by attending our programs, agree to abide
by Stanford Jazz Workshop's rules and regulations, which
all students
will receive
prior to
the Jazz Residency. All participants also must abide by all
Stanford University rules
and regulations. Any violation of the policies of either
Stanford Jazz Workshop or Stanford University will result
in dismissal
without refund.
