| Who is eligible
to attend Jazz Camp?
Jazz Camp welcomes students ages 12 to 17. The camp features tracks for all levels
of jazz players and a Beginning Jazz Program created for students who have a
basic proficiency* on an instrument but little or no previous jazz/improvisation
experience. Students will be placed in combos and classes with players of similar
experience and ability.
* We recommend that attendees have at least 18
months experience playing their instruments, whether or not this
has included any jazz.
Are there
programs for all instrumentalists, vocalists and string players?
Jazz Camp is designed for performers on all instruments,
including string players (such as violin, viola, cello) and
vocalists. The
Jazz Camp string program is designed to bridge the gap between
classical
study and jazz techniques, and offers string players instruction
in basic improvisation skills and other jazz techniques specific
to their
instruments. Vocalists receive instruction in jazz singing
and improvisation within a small ensemble setting, in addition
to the
same general curriculum
as instrumentalists.
Is it more appropriate for me to attend
the Jazz Camp or Jazz Residency?
Jazz Camp is limited to participants ages 12 to 17; Jazz
Residency is designed for adults. However, advanced participants
under 18
may be admitted to Jazz Residency by audition. There are
several factors
to consider when making the decision about which program
to attend, including housing, transportation, maturity
of student, performance
ability, and student goals.
Are friends and family welcome
at any Jazz Camp events?
Family and friends of Jazz Camp participants are invited
to attend the Stanford Jazz Participant Concert, held
on the final Friday of each week. Admission to this event is free. Family and friends may also purchase tickets for the SJW pre-concert buffet dinner.
The dinner takes place on Friday immediately before
the concert for a nominal charge. Dinner reservations must be made and paid for by Wednesday of each week.

and friends may purchase tickets to nightly Stanford Jazz Festival
concerts, which are public, general admission,
ticketed

Students attending Jazz Camp Week One receive free
admission to Stanford Jazz Festival concerts July 18 - 23. Students
attending

Are there recreational
activities during Jazz Camp?
Yes, Stanford Jazz Workshop's camp counselors arrange
various recreational activities each day. These
may include sports,
arts and crafts,
and campus tours. (Please note: Stanford sports and recreation facilities are not open to Stanford Jazz Camp participants.)
What evening
events take place?
After the evening's Stanford Jazz Festival concert, Jazz
Camp participants may practice, attend one of the supervised
jam
sessions, participate
in an informal
jam session, attend counselor-organized activities in the
dormitories, or enjoy free time. Following the festival
concert on Monday
through Thursday,
there is
a faculty jam session.
All participants are invited to attend. Our counseling
staff will supervise
resident
participants attending the jam session; commuter participants
should make necessary supervision
arrangements with their parents to attend the jam.

Keep in mind that each participant's individual schedule will be determined at the beginning of Camp or Residency based upon their unique requirements.
What is a Jazz Camp Commuter?
Commuter participants are those who are not staying on
campus in Stanford University dormitory facilities under
the supervision
of Stanford Jazz
Workshop camp counselors.
Transportation for commuter participants must be arranged by parent(s)
or guardian; Stanford Jazz Workshop is not responsible
for the transportation of commuter
students to the Stanford University campus.
All Jazz Camp participants must be on campus by 9:00 am for the mandatory general meeting, Monday through Friday. Students' daily schedules are distributed at this mandatory general meeting. Classes end at 5:00 pm each day. Commuter students are welcome to stay for Stanford Jazz Festival concerts, which end at approximately 9:30 pm each evening. Commuters do not receive meals, but may purchase their own food at dining halls or restaurants on the Stanford University campus.
What is a Jazz Camp Resident participant?
Resident participants are those staying on campus in
assigned Stanford University dormitory facilities
under the supervision
of Stanford
Jazz Workshop camp
counselors. Resident participants must adhere to
a curfew of 10 p.m. as well as other policies established
by Stanford Jazz Workshop. All resident participants
must obey all rules and regulations of Stanford University.
Residents will receive
a meal plan
with their
housing package that allows them to eat at designated
food
concessions.
What do students eat?
Students may eat at a range of food concessions in
the Tresidder Student Union. A variety of food
options are
available including
sandwiches,
pizza, salads,
and international choices. Additional food options
are available in the dormitories and on the Stanford
University
campus.
Although food
choices are limited
on Sunday evening, during the week there will be
choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Commuter participants should plan to purchase meals
as necessary from restaurants on the Stanford University
Campus.
Resident
participants will receive specific
information on the meal plan at the Sunday night
dormitory meeting.
What time is lunch each day?
Lunch break is from noon to 1 pm.
What type of housing accommodations are available for Jazz Camp Residents?
Jazz Camp Residents are housed in dormitories located on the Stanford University Campus. Generally, students will be assigned to a room with one other same-sex roommate of similar age. Roommate requests can be submitted with the general application. A roommate request is not a guarantee of rooming placement, although SJW does its best to accommodate requests.
The dorms have shared, same sex bathroom/shower facilities. Dorms do not have air conditioning. Because it can get hot during the summer at Stanford, we advise all students to bring their own fan.
Is there adult supervision in the dormitories during Jazz Camp?
There is one counselor for every 10-12 resident students.
Can students practice in the Dorms?
No. For the consideration of all dorm residents,
students can only practice at the Braun Music
Center.
How much
pocket money
should
the participant bring?
Prices at food providers at the Tresidder
Student Union range from $7 to $12 for a
lunch meal.
Resident Jazz
Camp participants
will
receive a meal
card, which
can be used to purchase all meals. Participants
may wish to bring extra money to purchase
books, jazz
recordings, film,
snacks,
souvenirs, or other supplies.
The Stanford Federal Credit Union, Bank of
America and Wells Fargo Bank are located
at Tresidder
Memorial Union.
ATM machines
connected
to the STAR,
PLUS, CIRRUS,
MC, and VISA systems are also available.
Are
there laundry facilities?
Yes. Washers and dryers are
located in the dormitories. Students must provide their own detergent.

families
of Jazz Camp participants?
We suggest the following hotel partners to participants wishing to stay off campus during SJW programs. Please mention the Stanford Jazz Workshop when making your reservations.
How do I register?
You can apply online via the Stanford Jazz Workshop website beginning December 15th; you can download and fax a completed enrollment form or you can call our office at 650.736.0324 and request that the form be mailed to you if you do not have internet access.
How
much does
Jazz Camp cost?
Tuition only (no dorm room) for one week is $995. Tuition plus Housing and Meals for one week is $1710.

Is financial aid available?
A limited number of financial-need based scholarships are available to SJW programs. Scholarship application postmark deadline: March 15, 2010. Financial aid applications may be downloaded from this page.
What forms of payment are acceptable?
Stanford Jazz Workshop accepts personal checks, cashier's checks, money orders and credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover). Make checks out to "Stanford Jazz Workshop." There will be a $25 charge on any returned check.

is payment due?
A $100 (per week) non-refundable
deposit is due with your enrollment

Space in all Stanford Jazz
Workshop summer programs
is limited and
granted to eligible
applicants
with completed
applications
on a first-come,
first-served
basis. Registration opens
December 15th 2009. Students registering prior to March 15, 2010 will receive an early registration discount of $50. A complete application includes:
application form and initial

Is parking available?
Parking on Stanford University is free on weekends and after 4:00 p.m. on weekdays. On weekdays, parking permits or hourly payment receipts are required for any parked vehicle on the Stanford University campus. Paid hourly parking is available at several lots. Daily and monthly parking permits are available for purchase at the Florence Moore Summer Conference office located across the parking lot from the Braun Music Center. Jazz Camp Resident participants are not allowed to drive, nor allowed to ride in a car (except with a parent or guardian), during Jazz Camp.

When are the participant recitals?
Jazz Camp participant recitals will be held on Friday, July 23 (Camp Week One) and Friday, July 30 (Camp Week Two). Recitals begin at 6:00 pm. Admission is free.

Is there secured instrument storage?
Yes. Instrument lockers are available on a limited, first-come,
first-served basis. Participants must provide their own lock.
For Jazz Camp participants who
are unable to get a locker, supervised rooms for instrument storage are available.
Does
everyone have to bring their own instrument? Are any available for rent?
Most classrooms are equipped with a piano, a drum set, and necessary amps.
If possible, students may also bring a small portable amp.
In most other cases, students should bring their own instruments.
It is possible for students to borrow equipment and instruments
from Stanford
Jazz Workshop,
but for some instruments the choices are limited. If it is difficult
for you to bring your own instrument, please see below for
more information,
and call
our offices if you need additional information. A deposit and a usage
fee will be required. Students will be responsible for any
damage that occurs
to these
instruments.

Brass and Woodwind instruments:
There is a limited supply of saxophones, trumpets, trombones,
and tubas/sousaphones. Please contact us well in advance to
reserve these instruments. These
instruments will require a deposit and a usage fee. Guitars:
We currently have no electric guitars available for loan.
Basses and Cellos:
We have a limited number of acoustic basses and cellos available
to lend. A deposit and usage fee are required. These are
good quality instruments, but
will not
be equipped with transducer "pick-ups." If you want to amplify these
instruments you must provide your own "pick up." Participants are
welcome to use our amplifiers (see below).
Pianos and Keyboards:
There will be a piano and/or keyboard provided in every rehearsal room.
Amps:
We will have a Peavey KBA100 in every combo room. These amps
have four channels, no effects, and limited equalization.
If bass and guitar players don’t
bring amps, they may both plug in to the KBA100. This is not an optimal sonic
situation, but it does work for rehearsal purposes. There are a very limited
number of small GK bass amps and several guitar amps, which are intended
primarily for faculty use. If these amps are available they
can be used by students,
but cannot be reserved in advance. If this situation is not adequate to your
needs,
you may bring your own amp. Jazz Camp students may not remove amps from the
rooms in which they are located. Separate guitar and bass amps will be provided
for
all performance situations.
Drums:
Drum sets and some percussion equipment will be available for a usage fee of $35, for those Stanford Jazz Workshop students who are unable to bring their own sets. Students will be able to use any of the drum equipment in our classrooms. These drums will be kept in their designated combo rehearsal room and cannot be moved by students. Payment of the usage fee does not entitle any student to use the set
at all times, nor will a student have exclusive use of one particular set. Students
may practice on Stanford Jazz Workshop's drum kits when they are available. These
practice opportunities will usually be at night when there are no classes in
session. Jazz Camp participants may have to share sets during master classes.
Students should bring their own sticks, and may bring their own cymbals if they prefer. Sets will
be provided at all performance situations.
Can students study more than one instrument
at camp?
Students must pick a primary instrument, which is the instrument they will
use for their placement auditions on the first day of Jazz Camp. This is
the instrument
they will play in their combo. In some cases, we may be able to accommodate
secondary instruments for master classes and private lessons.
Student Behavior
All participants, by attending our programs, agree to abide by
Stanford Jazz Workshop's rules and regulations, which all
students will receive prior to the
Jazz Camp. All participants must also abide by all Stanford University rules
and regulations. Any violation of the policies of either
Stanford Jazz Workshop or
Stanford University will result in dismissal without refund.
