| SJW's Jazz Camp curriculum emphasizes ear-training,
improvisation, and playing in small combos. Students are evaluated
and placed
into classes
and combos
with other musicians at their level. The Jazz Camp experience includes
master classes,
small ensemble playing, private lessons, and performance opportunities,
as well as theory, musicianship, and jazz history instruction. Each week
of
Jazz Camp
culminates in a festive public recital by student combos.
In addition to daily class sessions and rehearsals,
students are encouraged to attend Stanford Jazz Festival concerts
and informal jam sessions to
complement their instruction. Students may also participate in a range
of activities,
including
barbecues, social events, and sports and recreation opportunities at
Stanford University's world-class facilities. See Jazz Camp FAQ's for a sample daily schedule.
Jazz Camp participants may choose to stay on campus, or may attend the workshop as a commuter. See our FAQ's for more information.
*"Beginning" students
are defined as having little or no experience improvising or playing
jazz in a small combo but have studied their instrument
for at least 18 months.
