Nancy
King
Singer Nancy King, described
by The Oregonian as having “a supple voice, a flawless
ear and the instincts of a true
jazz improviser,” began her
professional career in San
Francisco, performing at the
now iconic Jazz Workshop
in the 1960’s. Known for her
command of scat singing, King
studied with Jon Hendricks of
the pioneering vocalese trio
Lambert, Hendricks and Ross,
an influence than can still be
heard.
Moving to Oregon, she collaborated with
bassist Glen Moore (of the eclectic world fusion jazz group Oregon),
recording three albums. Pianist/composer Steve Christofferson, with
whom she began playing in 1978, is
a frequent partner, and the duo has several recordings, including
Dream
Lands Volumes I & II (receiving airplay on both NPR and the CBC).
The
rapport between Steve and Nancy allows Nancy unlimited freedom vocally,
and is her preferred setting in which to perform.
Considered something of a best-kept secret
amongst aficionados, Nancy’s
talent began to peek out from under the Portland cloud cover in 1999,
when
she guested on Ray Brown’s Some of My
Best Friends are Singers CD
(reaching #1 on the Gavin Jazz Chart). She appeared on Tel Arc’s
25th
Anniversary Jazz Collection in 2002, and in 2006, added her voice
to Karin
Allyson’s chart-topping release, Footprints, as well as Live
at Jazz Standard with Fred Hersch. Nancy was invited by pianist Hersch to perform
in New
York at the legendary venue as part of his “Duo Invitation
Series,” and
the
evening was recorded unbeknownst to King; the result was a Grammy
nomination for “Best Jazz Vocal Album.”
While Nancy’s interpretative gifts
and impeccable intonation have made her
a favorite of critics and connoisseurs for years, it is her unmatched
warmth
and wit that makes audiences adore her! She shares herself fully
and without
artifice, drawing in each listener as if a personal friend. A true
free spirit in
every sense of the term, Nancy’s style is indubitably her own.
