Madeline
Eastman/Dena DeRose
Madeline Eastman
A longtime fixture at SJW where she heads the vocal
program, Madeline Eastman has built her reputation
as a bold and original interpreter of the jazz canon.
Her unique phrasing is an identifiable marker that
sets her apart and, along with her controlled delivery
and seemingly effortless improvisational ability, has
impressed critics far and wide. Audiences love her
for her lively onstage persona and wit. Eastman was
recognized by Downbeat as “Talent Deserving Wider
Recognition” in their Annual Critics Poll, and the Chicago
Reader describes her thusly: “Eastman’s great
contribution lies in the tough, contemporary edge she
brings to her music. She sings for adults; she even
makes you glad to be one.”

Dena DeRose
Pianist/singer Dena De Rose has created quite a stir of late with her CD, “A
Walk in the Park,” her fifth recording. Jazz Review proclaimed
her a “shining talent,”
saying “she’s both a genuine keyboard modernist who sings,
and vice versa.” Her ability as a vocalist and pianist is winning
critical raves and awards including All About Jazz’ 2003 “Jazz
Artist of the Year.” Dena studied classical piano as a youngster,
discovering jazz in junior high. Moving to New York in 1991, she established
herself as both a performer and educator (teaching at universities
both in the U.S. and abroad and joining the Stanford Jazz Workshop
faculty in 1996). These days, when not touring or recording, DeRose
resides during part of the year in Graz, Austria where she is the head
of the Vocal Jazz Department at the University of Dramatic Arts.
